2017-2018 SCHOOL YEAR INFO

Spanish instruction is open to all PCY students in 3rd - 6th grades as an elective. It is run by the LCUSD - not the PCY PTA. Sra. Katherine Hurley is the instructor. Her website is located at: lcusdspanish.weebly.com (password: lcusdspanish).

3rd-5th Grade Students

Registration for the LCUSD Spanish program will be online. The registration form (https://goo.gl/forms/j9proGG4Vrsafpd32) must be completed for each child you wish to register for Spanish. Complete the entire form and submit it, by clicking “submit” at the bottom of the form, before Wednesday, August 23, 2017. The 3rd grade classes are limited to 25 and the 4th and 5th grade classes are limited to 32 students per class per campus. Therefore, in order to equitably and fairly fill the classes, we will conduct a lottery if more than 50 students apply to the 3rd grade program and more than 64 students apply for the 4th and 5th grade classes. Students in 4th and 5th grades who have participated in the program in a previous grade will be given priority to those who are new to the program if numbers exceed capacity.

Classes: Sra. Hurley will create two Spanish groups per grade level (3rd grade: 25 students per group, 4th grade: 32 students per group, and 5th grade 32 students per group). Classes are on different days throughout the year and are 30 minutes in duration during the regular P.E. time for 3rd-5th graders. Students who are enrolled in Spanish will receive a confirmation notice of enrollment, a group number (Group 1 or Group 2) and a yearlong calendar that shows the days they should attend Spanish instead of P.E. Students will also receive the code for their Google Classroom. Please expect enrollment confirmation to arrive via email during the week of August 28 - September 1, 2017.

Start of Classes: Classes will begin the week of September 4, 2017. Prior to the start of class, students may explore the cultural video links on their Google classroom and the information on Sra. Hurley’s website.

For additional information, please refer to the “LCUSD Elementary Spanish Program FAQ” that is included in this email. You may contact Sra. Hurley via email at: katherinehurley@lcusd.net if you cannot find answers to your questions within this email or on the FAQ sheet.

6th Grade Students

Spanish Registration for Students in 6th Grade

Optional Spanish instruction is offered to all interested LCUSD students in grades 3rd-6th. The objective for Sixth Grade Spanish is to provide instruction that will allow students to test out of Spanish 1 and take Spanish 2 in 7th grade. Students who pass the placement test and take Spanish 2 in 7th grade will be one to two years ahead of other students in learning a foreign language.  Students must take the District sponsored five-week summer school class, offered at LCHS 7/8, to complete Spanish 1 which will prepare them for the placement test. The placement test is given at the end of the summer course. Students must take the summer course to be eligible for the placement exam; students who successfully pass the placement exam will be able to enroll in Spanish 2 as a 7th grader. The summer course is for graduating 6th graders only. To be eligible for the summer course, students must complete Sixth Grade Spanish with at least an 80% test grade average on chapter tests and benchmark assessments. Forms for summer school will go home in the spring of 2018 for students to register for the course. I've created a short slideshow that will walk you through the registration process. You can view that here.

Registration will be online this year. The registration form (https://goo.gl/forms/j9proGG4Vrsafpd32) must be completed in order to register your child for sixth grade Spanish. Sixth grade students will be involved in learning a foreign language through a variety of in-class activities and structured lessons provided by Sra. Hurley. Additional enrichment opportunities will also be available through Sra. Hurley’s website (www.lcusdspanish.weebly.com - passcode: lcusdspanish), and a Spanish Google Classroom that has been set up for sixth grade Spanish. Students will receive a code to sign into the Spanish Google Classroom when they receive enrollment confirmation. The Spanish Google Classroom is where students will receive their at-home practice assignments. Sixth grade students will be given homework throughout the year and are expected to practice what they have learned in class for a minimum of 15 minutes at home daily.  Families are encouraged to be involved in the learning process. Student achievement will be documented through progress reports which will be sent home at the end of each trimester. Students will not earn official grades.

Spanish classes are held on different days throughout the year.
