Lego Robotics Class for 2nd & 3rd Graders
Registration for after-school robotics classes for 2nd and 3rd graders is now open! Click here to sign your student up before spots fill. Details:

LEGO Robotics - Grades 2nd and 3rd
Grades: 2nd and 3rd
Time: 3:00-4:30pm
Instructor: Shanti Rao, Robert Marinovich
Meeting dates and times: 7 sessions, Tuesdays from 3-4:30 from Oct 16-Dec 11 (skipping Nov 6 for P/T Conferences and Nov 20 for Thanksgiving break)

Students will build and program a new robot each week using Lego WeDo kits (the ones we use for the Open Robotics Nights -- next one is December 6 at 5:30pm in the MPR). There are machines that crawl, machines that drive, machines that lift, and machines that bite. This class introduces engineering concepts such as force, torque, leverage, gear ratios, reciprocating motion, offset cams, and friction. We will program each robot's behavior in Scratch, but this is primarily about developing physical intuition and an introduction to event-driven programming, not a computer science class. A separate Senior class for grades 4-6 using Lego MindStorms will be offered in the spring. Parents of enrolled students are required to volunteer for at least one class session.
Lego Class (K-2) Sign Ups are Open
LEGOS! In this class, students will have ample opportunity to build from kits based on instructions, and creations using their imaginations. We will start with static builds and will work our way to builds with moveable parts. Lego Building offers additional practice and preparation for students interested in Lego Robotics. Parents of enrolled students will be required to volunteer for at least one class session during the year. Please send a light snack for your child to eat before class so s/he doesn't become "hangry." Children will get to take home some Legos to keep at the end of the year.

Cost: $100
Classes begin on Friday, October 19th
Sign-ups on the PTA website and are first come, first served!

Founders Day Award Nominations Due November 13th
Our school community is an amazing place thanks to those who contribute in so many ways to make our children's lives better. Every year, at the Founders Day celebration, PTA recognizes individuals who have made an exceptional effort to improve our children's educational experiences. These honorees include teachers, school staff members, parents, and other volunteers.

We all know at least one parent or teacher who very much deserves this honor. Please take the time to nominate that special someone by visiting our website, pcypta.org, and filling out the Honorary Service Awards Nomination Form. You can either turn it in to the PCY office (basket marked "Founders Day") or email it to Jennifer Riegler at jenriegler@gmail.com or Susan Harlan susan_harlan@yahoo.com.
Science Night Out - November 15th
Mark your calendar for our next Science Night Out: November 15, 5:30-7pm

Our next Science Night Out is on Thursday, November 15 - and it's going to be legen-waitforit-DARY. John Griswold, Conservator for the Norton Simon Museum, will walk us through the science behind preserving, authenticating and restoring some of the world's finest pieces of art. As usual, we will have pizza and an activity at 5:30, and the talk at 6pm. The event is free and no RSVP is required. Mark your calendar and plan to attend!

Too excited to wait until then? Here's a sneak peek into what is otherwise a highly technical process that requires complex analysis:
