August 1, 2017

Dear Paradise Canyon Families,

Summer is wrapping up and the scent of new school supplies is in the air. It’s time to start planning for the thunderous roar of children headed back to school! Our first day of school is Monday, Aug. 14th , and here is some important news for the upcoming year.

New Staff Members

I am delighted to introduce five staff members and extend them a warm welcome to the PCY Cougar family:

  • Annabel Dannemann, AM/PM Kindergarten - room 7 Ravi Brar, PM Kindergarten - room 7
  • Paula Ghermezian, 6th grade - room 26
  • Andrew Leavins, PE
  • Emily Selsor, Part-time Counselor

A bit more staffing news to share:

  • Ms. Kha married over the summer and has changed her name to Mrs. Matthews, so those incoming 6th grade families will see a new name but a familiar face.
  • Ms. Messina also was married over the summer and changed her name to Mrs. Egger. She is still teaching 1st grade.
  • Mr. Valdez was married before the end of the school year, but he’s keeping his name, Mr. Valdez. :)
  • Finally, Mrs. Babish, our Science Aide last year, has taken on the Computer Specialist position and is giving the Computer Lab a fresh, new look. We can’t wait for the unveiling when enrichment classes begin the second week of school.

Online Registration

Parents need to complete the online registration process as soon as you receive the email from the District office. P lease be sure to complete the Health section so the school is aware of your child’s current health needs . Continuing families have a code to log into Aeries and new families will receive a code via email from the LCUSD Technology Department. Your student’s registration will not be complete until you have completed the data confirmation process online in the Aeries Parent Portal and turned in the signed “Emergency Card” on the first day of school, August 14, 2017. If you do not have access to a computer or need assistance with this new process, you will be able to come

to the District Office to complete the registration process. These dates will be included in the email coming from the District. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this process.

Student Drop Off/Pick Up
This year we are changing the Gould Gate Drop Off location. To help move the Gould Ave. carline forward, students being dropped off on the Gould Ave. side will enter campus through the upper playground gate (north of room 6) starting at 7:45 a.m. All students entering the Gould Ave. side will gather at the snack tables until the 7:55 a.m. bell rings. At 7:55 a.m., students in grades 1-2 will be released to play and students in grades 3-6 will be released to walk to the lower playground until the 8:05 a.m. bell signals for all students to walk to their classrooms. Please note, students are not allowed on campus prior to 7:45 a.m. unless they are enrolled in CEC and being escorted to there by a parent/guardian.

And speaking of the carlines.. . Please look for your family name placards coming home on the first day of school. These placards greatly help our staff facilitate pick up at the end of the day. Place your placard on the dashboard of your car as you enter the carline. If you need more than one placard for another parent, grandparent, or family friend that picks up your child, we can make copies for you in the office. Keeping those carlines moving makes everyone happy, so please do your part to remember your placard every day, and follow the carline procedures . Ms. Hetzel and I will be out at the carlines in front of the school and on Gould to assist as much as possible.

We ask that all family members exit campus as soon as students are dropped off unless you are scheduled to volunteer. If you have more than one drop off/pick up time, we ask that you enjoy a walk around the block, visit a neighborhood establishment such as the library, or find another activity off campus while you wait. While it may be appealing to let children to play on the playgrounds or walk the hallways, it is a liability for the school and we cannot allow it. We will have friendly reminder signs saying “Good-bye families, we’re going to have a great day!” near the upper playground. Thank you for your cooperation.

Bell Schedules

The bell schedules and opening weeks of school will remain the same this year.

Class Sizes

As always, I am continually amazed and impressed with the fundraising efforts of our La Canada Flintridge Educational Foundation. Thanks to your generous donations to the LCFEF, PCY class sizes in grades K-3 are 18-22 students, and between 27-30 in grades 4-6. We are very fortunate to have such a supportive community that deeply values education! Thank you!!

Welcome to our new PTA President, Valerie Talbert, for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years! Please join Valerie, the PTA Executive Board members, and me at the first PTA meeting to review important information about school-wide activities and volunteer opportunities on Aug. 14 at 8:15 a.m.

Lunch Accounts

The price for lunch will remain the same this year at $3.50. You can find the lunch menu and the pre-pay option information on the LCUSD website , under the Food Services tab on the right. Parents are able to set up email notification as to when your child’s lunch account is running low on funds. This function of the pre-pay system helps with school/home communication throughout the year and is very convenient for families.

To ensure your child is fully engaged and participating in the unique learning experiences at school, it is vital he/she is here on time every day. Attendance will be taken within the first 5 minutes of your child’s school day. Those that arrive after that will be marked tardy. Unless your child has a fever, diarrhea, or there is an emergency, please strive to have your child at school every day and on time. If your child is feeling slightly under the weather, let your child’s teacher know to monitor them closely, and we will call you if he/she needs to be picked up.
